Monogram Combinations

Unique Monograms combining multiple styles.

Monogram Styles Used:

Monogram: RK

This project began with something that comes up regularly in monogramming - someone with only 2 initials, a first name and a last name - no middle name.

To design a monogram for this individual with initials R and K, we also wanted to make something unique, combining different characteristics (modern and traditional) into one visually compatible whole to use on a variety of things - towels, pillow covers, etc.

If we follow "traditional" monogramming conventions for a two-letter monogram the last initial would be larger than the first initial. Choosing the letter K from the Jefferson XL Monogram Set as the starting point, the next step was to search for an R with a more modern flavor. After some experimentation we settled on one from Circle Monogram Set 3 - the left version of the letter, which grows a bit larger from left to right. This letter, made slightly smaller in our software, nestles comfortably within the space provided by the loops of the K.

Again, more experimentation; with a variety of small design elements added on the right side - all eventually rejected as too fussy or too much like a third initial. The left version of the letter I from Oval Monogram Set 1 became an interesting compromise - abstract, somewhat modern, somewhat traditional. Adding copies on the left side of the design, rotated and mirrored, turned the whole combination into something resembling a sideways stylized crest.

The overall size is 7 3/4" (197mm) tall by 6 3/8" (162mm) wide.

How we made these monograms

Embroidery software programs make it easy to delete elements, copy and paste elements from other designs, resize different aspects, and merge elements together into one new design. Each program is a bit different in how the Edit functions are managed. Once you have learned to use yours, creating new monograms from other monogram parts is creative and fun. Experiment with different arrangements and colors.
