The Big Sleep - 1946Movie: The Big Sleep - 1946 Director: Howard Hawks Synopsis: Private Eye Phillip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart) becomes involved with the wealthy Sternwood family when he is hired by the family's aging patriarch, General Sternwood, to keep an eye on his youngest daughter Carmen (Martha Vickers) who is being pursued by a blackmailer named Arthur Gwynn Geiger (Theodore von Eltz). But it's her older sister Vivian (Lauren Bacall) who really catches his attention. This complex story, based on the Raymond Chandler novel, is set in 1939. The mysteries in the story all revolve around the disappearance of General Sternwood's former assistant, who has left with a mobster's wife. Scene: Marlowe follows Joe Brody (Louis Jean Heydt), who works for Geiger, to his apartment building. Later, he waits to see if one of the Sternwood daughters will turn up there. Monogram: Signage in old movies is often a source of interesting monograms. Here the apartment building - The Randall Arms - where Joe Brody lives has a nice script letter R on its awning.
