Director: Will Gluck Synopsis: High school student Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) makes up a story about a weekend relationship with a fictional college freshman. This story quickly circulates through the school's rumor mill, and as it grows she finds her life mirroring (in a modern high-school version) that of Hester Prynne in the book she is studying in school. This movie is an attempt to update this oft-told cautionary tale, this time as a teen comedy - see our Monograms in The Movies entry for "The Scarlet Letter" - versions from 1934, 1975, and 1995. Scene: Olive decides to flaunt her new "slut" image at school as a way of demonstrating that she is unaffected by all the gossip (and increasing her popularity) - turning the original "Scarlet Letter" premise - marking as shaming - on it's head Monogram: Olive on her way to class - with scarlet A.
