Bachelor Mother - 1939Movie: Bachelor Mother - 1939 Director: Garson Kanin Synopsis: Polly Parrish (Ginger Rogers) is a salesgirl at the department store John B. Merlin and Son in New York City. She is going to be "downsized" after the Christmas sales season. She sees a woman leave an infant on the steps of an orphanage, is afraid that the baby will roll down the steps, so picks it up. The door opens - and she is now presumed to be the mother. David Merlin (David Niven), the playboy son of the store's owner, learns of her "predicament" and arranges for her to keep her job so that unwed mother and child can stay together. Scene: Polly has a date with Fred (Frank Albertson) to go to a dance contest, where the winning couple will get $ 25 each. She tries to keep the baby secret at first, but then has a brainstorm to drop the baby off at the Merlin mansion and keep her date. David Merlin (and butler) race after her, but are told that they can't bring an infant to a dance contest. Frustrated, they take the baby back to Polly's apartment. Monogram: David's monogrammed white scarf, with DM in a diamond pattern, wrapped around the baby's waist. Contributed by: Mary Kinsey | |||||||||||
