Directions for Monogrammed Bookmark Project / October 2000

This project utilizes letters from the Art Deco Monogram Set 4. Any letter or letters from any of our sets that is small enough to fit would also be appropriate

Step 1. Print the instructions.

These are .pdf files, and require Adobe Acrobat Reader software in order to view and print.
To insure printing in exact size, be sure that FIT TO PAGE (see Properties under the Print Menu) is not selected.

Step 2. Merge Designs

A single letter monogram would be quite appropriate fot this project, but in order to add additional interest, we rotated two of the smaller letters, and aligned them with one larger vertical letter. This combination was then saved under a new filename.

Step 3. Hoop and sew out monogram

W'e've chosen felt for this project because the edges do not unravel. We've also chosen a medium-weight tearaway stabilizer.

Step 4. Remove stabilizer

Tear away the stabilizer. Use tweezers to help remove the stabilizer in the interior spaces of the letters.

Step 5. Prepare the reverse surface

In order to provide a smooth finished surface on the reverse of the bookmark, fuse heat fusible backing ('Wonder-under, etc.) to the reverse side of a piece of fabric in a color compatible with the front fabric. We chose ultrasuede.

Remove the paper backing. This will be easier to do if the fabric has cooled.

Step 6. Attach the reverse side to the monogrammed fabric

Using a hot iron, thoroughly bond the two pieces of fabric together.

Step 7. Trim.

The finished dimensions of the bookmark are up to you. The width is determined by the letter style chosen, and the length is based on the type of book you read.

With the letters we have used from the Art Deco Monogram Set 4, the finished size of our bookmark is 1 1/2" (38mm) x 8"( 203mm).

We have trimmed the two long edges 3/8" (10mm) outside the edges of the letters, and have cut the short sides with pinking shears.

Congratulations! Your project is complete.
