The house is owned by Nora Shelley (Jean Arthur). She has rented it to renowned Harvard law Professor Michael Lightcap (Ronald Colman) for the summer while he writes a new book. Lightcap hires Nora to be his live-in cook and secretary for a week until his manservant Tilney (Rex Ingram) arrives. In reality Leopold is Nora's childhood friend - who has just escaped from prison, having been convicted of arson and murder. Both Nora and Leopold team up to convince Lightcap that Leopold is innocent and wouldn't get a fair trial if he were recaptured. Scene: Lightcap visits a salon for a manicure.
