The Sea Hawk - 1940Movie: The Sea Hawk - 1940 Director: Michael Curtiz Synopsis: Captain Geoffrey Thorpe (Errol Flynn) is a privateer - a pirate - who nevertheless maintains loyalty to England. He creates an international incident by capturing a Spanish ship carrying the new Spanish ambassador to England, Don José Alvarez de Cordoba (Claude Rains), and his niece Doña Maria (Brenda Marshall). He takes her jewels, then gives them back in an attempt to woo her. Queen Elizabeth (Flora Robson) is displeased by the incident. Thorpe assures her of his loyalty, and receives her tacit approval for a mission to Panama to seize Spanish treasure, and keep an eye on the Spanish fleet. He is captured, and must fight his way to freedom with his sword. Scene: Captain Thorpe has a private audience with the Queen Monogram: The Queen's initial E appears, shadowed, on the fireplace mantle - a far less formal version of her official monogram than in more modern films - see The Queen (2006) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) Contributed by: EmbroideryArts | |||||||||||
