Synopsis: In pre-revolutionary France, a young aristocratic woman in left penniless when her father is murdered by the Crown. Countess Jeanne de la Motte (Hilary Swank) schemes to steal a priceless necklace and restore her fortune. With the help of forged papers, she convinces Cardinal de Rohan (Jonathan Pryce) that she is Marie Antoinette's confidante, and that if he becomes her patron he can improve his position with the Queen by purchasing the necklace as a gift.
Scene: Jeanne visits the Cardinal, who is skeptical of her, and her claims.
Monogram: A monogrammed handkerchief, embroidered in blue with a royal crest surrounding the initials MA plays a major role in convincing Cardinal de Rohan that Jeanne is legitimate.
