Englishman Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross), a Jewish runner, and Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson) a Scotsman born in China to missionary parents. Beginning in 1919 their stories are intertwine as rivals. After losing to Liddell in a meet in 1923 Harold hires professional trainer Sam Mussabini (Ian Holm) to improve his running. Both become part of the British Olympic team, along with Abrahams' Cambridge buddies, Lord Andrew Lindsay (Nigel Havers), Aubrey Montague (Nicholas Farrell), Henry Stallard (Daniel Gerroll) Scene: Abrahams and the favorite - American Charles Paddock (Dennis Christopher) - enter the arena for the 100 meter final.
