Project

Directions for Monogrammed Terrycloth Towels/ October 2002

(This project utilizes letters from our Diamond Monogram Set 4.)

Step 1. Print the template and instructions.

These are .pdf files, and require Adobe Acrobat Reader software in order to view and print.
To insure printing in exact size, be sure that FIT TO PAGE (see Properties under the Print Menu) is not selected.

Step 2. Review instructions and materials required (materials list at the end of these instructions).

Step 3. Purchase and download cmpanion design

The companion design for this project is a background fill pattern with a satin stitch border, which functions as a frame.

The product file is available in 7 different formats:
.csd - Singer / P.O.E.M
.dst - Tajima
.exp - Melco expanded
.hus - Husqvarna Viking
.pcs - Pfaff
.pes - Brother, Babylock, Bernina
.sew - Janome/New Home, Elna

Step 4. Create a monogram.

We used three letters from the Diamond Monogram Set 4. The set consists of 26 left side, 26 middle, and 26 right side letters.

Choose the appropriate letters and create a three-letter monogram by merging the left, middle and right side letters of your choice together, then save the combination under a new filename after you are satisfied with the spacing and position of the individual letters.

Step 5. Merge background and monogram together

Within your embroidery software program, merge the background design and the three-letter monogram design.

The background design will be sewn first, followed by the monogram.

Step 6. Hoop the towel.

Determine the center point of the width of the towel by folding the towel in half lengthwise, and lightly press the fold with a warm iron, or by running the heel of your hand over it several times. This will leave a faint crease when the towel is unfolded, and the crease will establish the side-to-side center.

Measure along this center seam to find the center of the design.

The triangle background is 4 1/2" (114mm) tall. We positioned the design so that the lower tip of the triangle was 2 1/2" (63mm) from the edge of the towel.

In order to insure that the diamond shape is correctly aligned, it is important that the towel be perfectly square in the hoop.

Hoop the towel together with one layer of Romeo heavy-duty water soluable stabilizer (or equivalent) as a backing. A topping should not be necessary.

Step 7. Embroider the monogram.

Put the hoop on the machine, and insure that the needle is positioned directly over the mark for the design center.

Embroider the monogram, then remove the water-soluble backing by carefully trimming away any excess, then soaking the towel in a pan of warm water for several hours.

After the backing has been soaked away the towel can be washed.

Congratulations! Your project is complete.
