Mr. Sardonicus - 1961

Movie: Mr. Sardonicus - 1961

Director: William Castle

Synopsis: Sir Robert Cargrave (Ronald Lewis) is an eminent surgeon who has developed a new technique for muscle relaxation. He is contacted by his one-time love, Maude (Audrey Dalton) who is now married to Baron Sardonicus (Guy Rolfe). He is met on his arrival by Sardonicus's faithul servent Krull (Oskar Homolka) a sadist-in-training. Sir Robert learns that his patient wears a mask to disguise his face, frozen in a permanent hideous grin after digging up his father's grave to retrieve a winning lottery ticket that was buried in his coat pocket. If he doesn't cure Sardonicus then Maude will be tortured. This classic dark drama includes a scene near the end where William Castle, the director, appears on screen, speaks to the audience, and offers them the opportunity to vote for either mercy or more torture for Mr. Sardonicus.

Scene: This movie is filled with variations of Mr. Sardonicus's monogram - the initial S. We found 7 variations appearing in different scenes.

Monogram: Top to Bottom: 1. The door to Mr. Sardonius's bedroom, with double initials. 2. Initial S, in a similar style, but carved in stone with herald border, for the entrance gate. 3. Sir Robert - with another three-dimensional variation in the background - this one in glazed terra cotta. 4. Mr. Sardonicus, wearing his mask, with a different heraldry shield in the background. 5. Signature, and sealing wax impression. 6. Signet ring with initial S. Mr Sardonicus has been "cured" - his grin is gone. 7. Elaborate embroidered chair back. Mr Sadonicus finds that although his grin is gone, he can now no longer open his mouth.
